Our department boasts many treasures: varied sceneries each one more beautiful than the next one, an important architectural heritage, vivid traditions and culture. Five of our villages have won prizes as "the most beautiful villages in France" (Eus, Evol, Mosset, Castelnou and Villefranche-de-Conflent).
The General Council directly manages natural sites (listed site of Les Bouillouses, Voluntary Nature Reserve of Nyer (ENSID), Marine Nature Reserve of Cerbère-Banyuls, the Lake of Villeneuve de la Raho) and cultural sites (the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, the Priory of Serrabona, the Chapel of Notre-Dame des Anges, the Royal Castle of Collioure).
So, you will marvel at a wide range of lanscapes. A great number of artists, in particular painters, fell under the region's charm. Attracted by the light and special colours bathing our land. Matisse et Derain, ont par exemple élu domicile à Collioure en 1905 et ont contribué au courant fauviste.
